Biography

November 30, 1919 in Port Said in a family arriving from Chios [1] .

After graduating from a Greek school in Egypt, he studied at a theological seminary on the island of Halki , which he graduated in 1939 [2] .

In 1939 he was ordained to the rank of deacon , since 1940 - archdeacon . He studied at graduate school in Oxford and in Paris [2] .

In January 1945, he accompanied Patriarch of Alexandria Christopher II , who was an honored guest during the Local Council of the Russian Orthodox Church [3] .

In 1948, Patriarch Christopher II was ordained priest with the elevation to the rank of archimandrite .

He was elected and December 5, 1958 consecrated Metropolitan of Carthage .

Since February 23, 1987 - Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa .

He actively participated in the ecumenical movement , was an important figure in the inter-religious dialogue of the twentieth century, including dialogue with Islam [4] . He was even called the "Patriarch of dialogue." He was president of the World Council of Churches [1] .

He was fluent in Arabic , Greek , French , English and Italian. [5]

Like his predecessors, he worked continuously in the mission field, mainly in countries such as Kenya , Zaire , Cameroon and especially Uganda . He did much to provide humanitarian assistance to the African people. He founded the Kampala Metropolis on the territory of Uganda. Constantly showed a lively and active participation in the publications of the Alexandrian Patriarchate [6] .

In September-October 1992 he hosted the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Alexy II . Their conversation was devoted to the development of interconnections and joint efforts to strengthen pan-Orthodox unity and cooperation. The return visit of Patriarch Parthenius III took place in May-June 1993 [3] .

July 30 - 31, 1993 in Istanbul, was a member of the Council, which condemned the actions of the Patriarch of Jerusalem Diodorus , aimed at creating a representative office in Australia. Communion was interrupted with Patriarch Diodorus, and two bishops were deprived of the rank. Soon, Patriarch Dioskor abandoned these plans, the bans were removed, and communication was restored [7] .

In May 1996, he again visited the Russian Church in connection with the celebration of the 40th anniversary of the metochion of the Alexandrian Orthodox Church in Odessa [3] .

He died suddenly on July 23, 1996 in Amorgos from cardiac arrest. The body of the deceased Patriarch was laid in the Monastery of Petraki, then his body was transported to the Athens Cathedral for burial. He was buried in the monastery of St. George in Cairo [4] .

July 22, 2016 in the Orthodox Spiritual Center of Cairo in Heliopolis, a memorable evening was held dedicated to the memory of the late Patriarch Parthenius III [8] .
