The route crosses the sea between Rosslare in Ireland and Ferrol in Spain, but ferries between them do not go.
Northern Ireland
Like all other European routes in the UK , E01 is not marked on signs in Northern Ireland. The route starts in Larne , County Antrim , as the A8 road. In the short A8 segment in Newtownabbey, the highway is a highway and is designated as the A8 (M) highway. This motorway joins the much longer Irish M2 to Belfast . In Belfast, the road turns into the A12, a two-lane road leading to the M1 motorway. Road A1 branches off the motorway near Lisburn and goes south, alternating two-lane and single-lane roads to the last segment of the two-lane road from Newry and then crosses the border to Ireland.
Ireland
The two-lane road continues in Ireland as the N1, which from the county of Louth goes as a motorway under the name M1. The road goes along the M1 south to Dublin , where in the northern suburbs it joins the ring road of Dublin, the M50 motorway. Further, the route follows the M50 through the suburbs of Dublin, before going to the M11 motorway near Shankil. M11 goes further as a two-lane road N11 south of Bray in Wicklow County . This part of the road passes through the Glen of the Downs National Reserve. Apart from a single-lane section of the road between Ratnou and Arklow in County Wicklow, the road is either two-lane or goes by motorway to the southern part of Goree in Wexford County . After that, the rest of the route in Ireland is single-lane and passes through several towns and villages. N11 goes to Wexford , where at the station outside the city, the road intersects with N25, which runs from Cork . Further, the route goes along the N25 to the end point in Ireland to Rosslare Europort .
Like other European routes, E01 was not designated in Ireland until 2007. Part of the route passing by Gori, opened in 2007 , was the first part in Ireland, designated E01, although the designation appears only on signs on the road itself, but on no other there are no pointers. The designation also appeared on most signs on the M1 highway in July 2008 and is gradually added to the signs on the N11 / M11 highway.
Spain
E01 has two stretches in Spain . The northern part of the route runs from Ferrol to Tui on the border with Portugal. The route goes on the AP-9 motorway and passes by the cities of A Coruña , Santiago de Compostela , Pontevedra and Vigo . The road crosses the border along the Mino River in the city of Tui.
Portugal
In Portugal, the route consists of the following parts, each of which is a motorway:
- A3 : Walesa (Border) - Braga - Porto
- A1 : Porto - Coimbra - Lisbon
- A3 : Lisbon - Albufeira
- A22 : Albufeira - Kastru Marine (border)
On the segment Aveiro - Lisbon, the roads A1, E01 follow the same route as the E80 . In this segment, the designation E80 prevails over the designation E01 and the designation of the latter rarely appears.
Spain
The second segment of the route in Spain runs between Ayamonte on the border with Portugal and Seville . The route follows the A-49 motorway and passes by Huelva . The border between the countries crosses the Guadiana River
