David Martin Scott Steele, Baron Steele Aikwood ( born David Martin Scott Steel, Baron Steel of Aikwood ; March 31, 1938 , Kirkcaldy ) - British politician. From 1976 to 1988, he served as chairman of the Liberal Party . He was also a member of the House of Lords in the UK , and from 1999 to 2003, he served as speaker of the Scottish Parliament .

Biography

David Steele was born March 31, 1938 in Scotland in the city of Kirkcaldy. His father, also named David Steele, was a minister of the Scottish Church. David Steele received his education at the Prince of Wales School, as well as at George Washington College in Edinburgh . While still in college, David Steel became chairman of the University Liberal Club. In 1964, at the age of 25, he became a member of parliament. As a member of parliament, David Steele voted in favor of a law on the legalization of abortion in the UK in 1967.

In 1976, David Still became chairman of the Liberal Party. In the 1983 parliamentary elections , the Liberal Party, led by him, together with the Social Democratic Party , joined the Liberal Social Democratic Alliance. In 1988, at the suggestion of Steel, the Liberal Party merged with the Social Democratic Party into the Liberal Democrats Party . David Steele was the interim chairman of the Liberal Democrats Party until he was elected leader of the Paddy Ashdown party. In 1990, David Steele received the hereditary noble title and the Order of the British Empire . In 1994, David Steele accepted the offer to run for the European Parliament. Although he was not elected, the election campaign was very successful. In the same year, he became president of the Liberal International, an international organization uniting liberal parties. In 1999, David Steele was elected Speaker of the Scottish Parliament [1] .
