History

The painting was supposedly completed on July 10, 1890, 19 days before the death of Van Gogh in Auvers-sur-Oise . There is a version that Vincent committed suicide in the process of writing this picture; This version of the finale of the artist's life was presented in the film “ Thirst for Life ”, where the actor playing Van Gogh ( Kirk Douglas ) shoots himself in the head at the field, completing work on the canvas. However, this theory has no evidence, except for the pronounced depressiveness of the picture, which probably caused associations with the artist’s suicide soon to follow. For a long time it was believed that this was the last work of Van Gogh, but the study of Vincent's letters with a high degree of probability indicates that his last work was the painting Wheat Fields [2] , although there is still ambiguity in this matter.
