Career
He became a soldier in 1936. From the first days of World War II was on its fronts. He was the chief of staff of the rifle regiment. Once surrounded, behind enemy lines he was actively organizing partisan detachments, and participated in battles against the invaders in Bryansk, Oryol, Kiev, Minsk and other areas.
In September 1941, when the regiment was conducting heavy defensive battles in the Bryansk region, Georgy Fedorovich, with part of the regiment’s divisions, was cut off from the main forces of the division. An experienced personnel officer Pokrovsky from the remaining surrounded by fighters and local residents organized the partisan detachment, and then the combat-ready partisan brigade. By the beginning of 1942, it included more than 1,500 fighters.
In addition, during this period, on the section of the Bryansk-Gomel railway, the brigade of Lieutenant Colonel G.F. Pokrovsky derailed 25 military trains with manpower and equipment, where up to two thousand German soldiers and officers were killed.
Behind Enemy Lines
The German command decided to destroy all the partisan detachments. By September 1942, the Germans organized the general "comb" of the forest. The partisans began to attack the far superior forces of the Nazis. "Proces" was carried out with air reconnaissance and artillery fire. The Germans were accompanied by tanks and motorcyclists. Skillfully maneuvering in the forest, partisans skillfully and courageously fought. In them, G.F. Pokrovsky showed the extraordinary ability of the commander. The "comb" of the forests of the Bryansk region did not bring the Germans success. The partisans continued to smash the enemy.
In January 1943, Georgy Fedorovich became deputy commander of the united partisan brigades of the western regions of the Oryol region . He did a great job of strengthening the combat effectiveness of brigades, detachments and groups, and equipping them with weapons. Within two months he managed to organize and staff the artillery partisan regiment. Weapons and other equipment were obtained in battles.
On instructions from the Supreme High Command Headquarters, in March 1943, Georgy Fedorovich carefully developed a military operation to capture and destroy the Vygonny railway bridge across the Desna . German military echelons, equipment and ammunition went to the front along this bridge in an endless stream. On the night of March 8, partisans blew up the bridge and destroyed more than a thousand enemy soldiers and officers. For a whole month and a half, the movement of trains was suspended. This contributed to the successful operations of the Soviet troops in the surrounding areas. The battle account of the glorious deeds of George Pokrovsky grew. And here is the new combat mission. By order of the chief of the Central headquarters of the partisan movement, G.F. Pokrovsky was transferred by plane to the northern regions of the Kiev region. There he became the head of a partisan formation named after V.I. Chapaev .
In September, the successful offensive of the 1st Ukrainian Front began. And Lieutenant Colonel Pokrovsky received a battle order - to seize a bridgehead on the Pripyat River . After careful preparation, the partisans honorably completed the difficult task. Under the command of G.F. Pokrovsky, the people's avengers unexpectedly for the enemy decisively went on the offensive, seized the district center Novosepelevichi and 15 other settlements. The bridgehead in Pripyat was created. Repulsing the enemy’s attacks, attacking its units and subunits, the partisans helped the advancing 15th Rifle Corps cross the river.
In February, Georgy Fedorovich was transferred to the northern regions of the Minsk region. Here he became the head of the Popular Avengers partisan brigade. The team developed vigorous activity. In just five months, more than 30 military echelons with Nazi troops and military equipment were derailed, 146 bridges on highway and dirt roads were blown up, 188 vehicles, about 2,000 soldiers and officers were destroyed.
In the spring of 1944, the German command blocked the partisan detachments of the Borisov zone. The brigade of G.F. Pokrovsky was also in the ring. For more than a crescent, the partisans fought with superior enemy forces, causing him great damage. Georgy Fedorovich withdrew the brigade from the encirclement in full force, while maintaining combat efficiency. Soon, interacting with the advancing Soviet troops, the partisan brigade helped free the cities of Vileika, Molodechno, Smorgon from the German troops.
For exemplary performance of combat missions of the command, for special merits in the partisan movement by decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Council of the USSR of August 15, 1944, Georgy Pokrovsky was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union .
Remembering the partisan days, retired colonel G.F. Pokrovsky would write:
“In the life of every person there are events that remain in the memory for a long time and which he cannot remember without deep excitement. For me, such an event was a trip from the Bryansk forests to the capital of our Motherland - Moscow in August 1942. Parting with the capital, we partisans, inspired by the attention, care and trust of the Soviet government, felt stronger than before. Partisan war broke out behind enemy lines with greater force. "
After the war, G.F. Pokrovsky continued to serve in the army. In 1948 he graduated from the Military Academy named after M.V. Frunze, and in 1955 - from the Military Academy of the General Staff. Since 1964, Colonel G.F. Pokrovsky in reserve. He worked in the Ministry of Foreign Trade of the USSR . He lived in Moscow.
