Biography
Eberhard was the eldest son of the Bavarian Duke Arnulf the Evil .
In 933 or 934, he was offered the crown of Italy after the death of King Rudolph II , but Eberhard’s campaign in Italy failed.
In 937, Arnulf the Evil died and Eberhard inherited the duchy of Bavaria . Using the death of Arnulf, the German king Otto I the Great decided to restore Germany’s power over Bavaria, almost completely eliminated by Arnulf, and in 938 invaded the possession of Eberhard. In two military campaigns, Otton defeated the duke and deposed him from the throne. Instead of Eberhard, his uncle Bertold , who ruled before in Carinthia, was made duke. The future fate of Eberhard is not known: perhaps he died around 940 or left for Hungary (the duke continued his father's peacekeeping policy with the Hungarians).
