Twenty-five kopecks, half a cent - Russian silver coin, equal to 25 kopecks (half a half ). It was first minted in 1654 on quarters of European thalers and was a defective coin, since at the silver rate it cost only 16 kopecks. The regular minting of full silver half-fifties began in 1701 and continued intermittently until 1810. Since 1827, the coin was called 25 kopecks. The name change is due to the fact that the proposed trial half-fifty of 1827 had a design similar to that of a 5-ruble gold coin that went then. Therefore, out of fear of possible fakes, a coin with a new name and a different external design was approved for circulation. The fear was not in vain - when, since 1886, the design of the 25th penny again became the same with gold coins - such fakes appeared in reality.
The mass minting of 25 kopeks for circulation was stopped in 1900, in 1901 a small number of coins were minted.
In Soviet times, a trial 25 kopeck was minted in 1955, but this face value was not minted for circulation.
Modernity
In modern Russia, half a cent is not minted, but in some countries of the former USSR ( Ukraine , Transnistria ), it has circulation as a bargaining chip.
