Hematopoietic system - a system of organs of the body responsible for the constancy of the composition of the blood . Since shaped elements are continuously destroyed in the body (e.g., platelets disintegrate after about a week), the main function of the hematopoietic organs is the constant replenishment of the cellular elements of the blood - hematopoiesis or hematopoiesis ( lat. Haemopoiesis ). The main components of the hematopoietic system are bone marrow , lymph nodes and the spleen .
In the bone marrow, the formation of red blood cells , various forms of white blood cells and platelets .
Lymph nodes participate in hematopoiesis, producing lymphocytes , plasma cells .
The spleen consists of the so-called. red and white pulp. Red pulp is filled with blood cells, mainly red blood cells ; white pulp is formed by lymphoid tissue in which lymphocytes are produced. In addition to the hematopoietic function, the spleen captures damaged red blood cells, microorganisms, and other elements alien to the body from the blood stream that enter the bloodstream; antibodies are produced in it.
