He made a career under the emperor Julian . After coming to power (in 361), Julian appointed Mamertin to manage finances [2] and in the same year gave him the post of prefect of the Praetorium of Illyric .
In 362, Julian, in order to strengthen his position in the fight against Constantius II , gave the title of consul to two barbarians - Mamertin (representative of the civil administration) and Flavius Nevitte (representative of the army). For granting the highest title in the empire to the barbarians, Julian was criticized even by his ardent supporter, the historian Ammianus Marcellinus . On January 1 of the same year, he made a panegyric in Constantinople, thanks to the emperor for his new post. The text of this panegyric is preserved in the collection Panegyrici Latini . After defeating Constantius, Julian included Mamertin in the Chalcedon Commission , which investigated the activities of Constantius' former close associates.
From 361 to 364 was the prefect of Italy, Africa and Illyria. It is known that in 364 Illyric was for a short time an independent prefecture under the leadership of Sextus Petronius Proba , but from the end of 364 Mamertin was again listed as the prefect of Italy, Africa and Illyria. His colleagues in the prefecture were Saturnius Sallutius in the East, and Decimius Germanian in Gaul.
After the death of Julian, in 365, Mametin was charged with embezzlement after he returned from Rome, where he went on official business. Mamertin was dismissed, his successor at the post was Vulcius Rufin (Ammianus Marcellinus wrongly dates this event in the year 367).
The years of Mamertin's life are unknown, but in 362 he was already an elderly man.
The Code of Theodosius left many laws addressed to Mamertin.
