Kuninda or Kulinda is an ancient Indian state located in the central Himalayas (modern Indian states of Uttarakhand and the southern part of Himachal Pradesh ) and existed from the 2nd century BC. e. to the III century AD e.
Although the documented history of the state of Kunind begins in the II century BC. e., references to the Kunind tribe or nationality inhabiting the country of Kulindadesh are contained in the ancient Indian epos " Mahabharata " and in the Puranas . [1] In particular, the Mahabharata states that the Kuninda were defeated by Arjuna . One of the first Kunind kings was Amoghabhuti , who ruled the mountain valley of the Yamuna and Sutleja rivers in the late II - early I century BC. e. . The ancient Greek historian Ptolemy calls the homeland of the Kuninda region, located at the source of the Ganges , Yamuna and Satlej. [2]
In Kalsi, in the Himalayan region of Garhwal , the inscription Ashoka was found, indicating the presence of Buddhism in this region in the 4th century BC. e. The kingdom of Kuninda ceased to exist in the III century , and in the IV century Shaivism spread widely in the region.
