Career

He began to play in the training groups “Torpedo” (Kutaisi) with Carlo Khurtsidze (1968). Ramaz did not show himself when enrolling in school, but thanks to his father's insistent requests, he was taken to school for a probationary period [3] .

In 1971-1976 Shengelia played in “Torpedo” Kutaisi. At the beginning of 1977, together with Torpedo partners T. Sulakvelidze and T. Kostava, he was invited by coach Nodar Akhalkatsi to Dynamo Tbilisi .

1981 is the most successful year for Shengel. He, as part of Dynamo Tbilisi, is the winner of the Cup of Cups , together with the USSR team made his way to the final of World Cup 82 (played there in all matches, scored a goal to the Scots), is again recognized as the country's best football player. Shengelia was distinguished by scoring flair, high starting speed, functional readiness, full dedication on the field [4] .

In August 1981, he made a bright appearance at the preseason “tournament of four” in Spain. Dynamo lost to Real Madrid 2-4 in the semi-finals (leading 2-1 in the course of the meeting), and in the match for 3rd place they won 2-1 against Bayern Munich. Ramaz Shengelia played all four goals in Tbilisi.

In total, the USSR national team spent 26 matches, scored 10 goals.

After 1983, the athlete's career began to decline. He did not appear in the national team anymore, but in Dynamo he was no different. The exception was the 1987 season, when Ramaz flashed in the UEFA Cup 87/88 scoring 4 goals in 6 matches and in the all-Union championship entered the top ten scorers (11 goals in 27 matches).

In 1989, he spent the season for the Swedish Holmsund FC , after which he ended his career. Shengelia later regretted that he had stopped speaking quite early [5] .

Head of the national teams department of the Football Federation of Georgia (1990-1992). In the mid-1990s, for several years he was the technical director of the Georgian team, coached by Alexander Chivadze.

In 2004, he had an accident when he was returning from Kutaisi to Tbilisi by car. Doctors diagnosed intracranial hematoma , after which Shengelia increasingly entered the football field as part of a team of veterans [6] .

In May 2012, he was appointed Honorary Vice President of the Georgian Football Federation [7] .
