History
It was founded by the Romans, calling it Pax-Augusta; The Moors who invaded the peninsula called him Badalios or Batalhus [2] .
In 1230, the city was conquered by Spanish troops under the leadership of King Alfonso IX . In the same year he ordered the construction of the main church of the city, the Cathedral of Saint Juan Bautista from Badajoz.
Being on the border of Spain and Portugal, as a strong by nature and constantly strengthened fortress, Badajoz was of great strategic importance in all the wars that took place on the Iberian Peninsula. During the Napoleonic wars , when the British, under the authority of the Duke Wellington , were firmly established in Portugal, the city became a springboard for the advance of both the French in Portugal and the British in Spain; therefore, in the course of two years, he experienced four sieges, and he was taken by storm twice [2] .
