Biography

Ira Dean Jagger was born in the village of Kalambus Grove in Ohio . Before starting a career in cinema, he worked as a teacher for some time, appeared in vaudeville and on radio . [1] In the movie, Jagger made his debut in 1929 in the movie "Woman from Hell" with Mary Astor in the lead role. Soon he became a fairly successful actor, starring in the years of his career in almost a hundred films, while remaining mostly in secondary roles.

A breakthrough in cinema for him was the role of Brigham Young in the 1940 eponymous film. [2] As the technical adviser to the film George P. Piper, who personally knew Young, admitted later, Dean Jagger not only looked like a famous Mormon, but also looked like him in a way of speaking and acting. [2]

His next successful roles were Edward Creighton in Western Union ( 1941 ), Paul Baxter in When Strangers Get Married (1944), Kevin Connors in Kenney's Sister ( 1946 ) and Grant in Rauls Walsh western , Bounty Hunter ( 1947 ). In 1950, Dean Jagger won the Academy Award in the nomination Best Supporting Actor for the role of Major Harvey Steovall in the military drama " Vertical Takeoff ."

In 1958, Jagger played the father of the character Elvis Presley in the musical drama King Creole . Two years later, he appeared in the successful drama " Elmer Gantry ", which received three Oscars . He also had notable roles in The Letter from the Kremlin ( 1970 ) and The Vanishing Point ( 1971 ). Dean Jagger has achieved significant success on television - in the mid -1960s, he was twice nominated for an Emmy for his role in the television series Mr. Nowak. In 1980 he won the Emmi Day Prize for participating in the “This is Life” religious program.

Dean Jagger was married three times; from the second marriage he has a daughter. In 1972, the actor became a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints . [3] [4] Dean Jagger died of heart disease in February 1991 in Santa Monica , California . His contribution to the cinema is marked by a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame .
