Small ants, usually less than 4 mm (rarely more than 10 mm). Platband protrudes back into the middle part of the head, two-lobed. The stalk between the breast and the abdomen consists of two segments: the petiolus and postpetiolus (the latter is clearly separated from the abdomen), the sting is developed, pupae are naked (without cocoon). Among the representatives of many well-known and dangerous invasive species: house ant ( Monomorium pharaonis ), red fire ant ( Solenopsis invicta ) and others [2] .
About 20 genera and about 600 species (including about 300 species from the genus Monomorium and 200 from the genus Solenopsis Westwood, 1840 ). Composed of the tribes Solenopsidini , Pheidologetonini and Megalomyrmecini Dlussky & Fedoseeva, 1988 . Close to the tribes Adelomyrmecini Fernández, 2004 , Myrmicariini Forel, 1893 , Stegomyrmecini Wheeler, 1922 , which are sometimes combined with it [3] [1] .

Fossil species Hypopomyrmex bombiccii and Oxyidris antillana are also referred to as tribe incertae sedis . Attempts to divide this tribe into groups led to the following classification:
- Carebara genus group: Adlerzia - Afroxyidris - Carebara - Machomyrma - Mayriella - Oligomyrmex - Paedalgus - Pheidologeton - Tranopelta
- Solenopsis genus group: Allomerus - Anillomyrma - Bondroitia - Carebarella - Diplomorium - Megalomyrmex - Monomorium - Oxyepoecus - Solenopsis
