For the production of the film, a technique called rotoscoping was used : animation artists painted each frame on top of the real one. This artistic technique allowed to finish some elements that were not present in the actual shootings: hallucinations of the main characters, futuristic costumes, and also convey a special perception of reality by the main character.
Story
The film takes place in the United States in the near future (for the film - in 2013). The spread of drugs has become catastrophic: about 20% of the country's population are chronic drug addicts. The police department for combating drug trafficking is trying to introduce “ mole ” among drug addicts. The level of secrecy of the operation is such that even the curator of the operation does not know the real name and face of the secret agent - they communicate with each other, wearing kaleidoscopic suits that constantly change the person’s appearance and voice. As a result, there comes a time when special agent Bob Arctor ( Keanu Reeves ) is given the task of monitoring drug addict Bob Arctor - that is, in fact, of himself. By this time, he was already heavily addicted to the newest drug, “substance D,” which is steadily destroying his consciousness, and surveillance of himself no longer seems to him the strangest thing that can happen to a person. The curator of the operation and Arctor know each other only by pseudonyms - Hank and Fred.
Arktor lives in a house with two drug addicts. At the same time, one of them is a police informant who regularly reports information to Hank and Fred. Arctor is often visited by his acquaintance named Donna ( Winona Ryder ), also a drug addict. Due to the sharp deterioration in the health of the Arctor, they are placed in a medical institution of the New Way organization. It turns out that the “New Way” is a sect for the production of drugs, in which drug addicts work for treatment. The mutual responsibility around the drug stronghold is high, and the evidence of breaking the law is so complicated that the police decide to risk their officer (Arctor) in the hope that the latter will overcome drug addiction and recover enough to help expose the criminals. The film ends with a scene in which the blurred mind of the protagonist begins to wake up.
