Biography

Born on November 8, 1882 in the Valegotsulovo Valegotsulovsky parish, Ananievsky district, Kherson province of the Russian Empire (now the village of Dolinskoe, Ananievsky district, Odessa region of Ukraine).

He studied at the Odessa Music School of the Imperial Russian Music Society (IRMO) and the Moscow Philharmonic School. Then he graduated from the St. Petersburg Conservatory (1910) in the composition class of N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov [4] and A. K. Lyadov and in the class of conducting N. N. Cherepnin .

One of the founders of the Society of Jewish Folk Music. Researcher Georgian Georgian folklore. Director of the Tiflis Conservatory (1917).

From 1919 he lived in Eretz Yisrael , since 1920 - in the USA.

The musical director of one of the largest reformist synagogues in New York, Temple Emanu-El .

One of the founders of the American League of Composers.

Died June 30, 1959 in Port Chester , New York , USA .
