Biography
In 1886, Chernyshev graduated from the Kirzhach teacher's seminary . In 1886-1912 he taught in rural, county, city schools. He was involved by A. A. Shakhmatov for vocabulary work at the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences .
Scientific activity
The main works of V.I. Chernyshev are devoted to lexicology , dialectology , spelling , spelling , stylistics and methods of teaching the Russian language. Among them - "The correctness and purity of Russian speech" ( 1911 ). Chernyshev studied the language and style of such domestic writers as E. A. Baratynsky , A. V. Koltsov , V. I. Maykov , N. A. Nekrasov , I. S. Turgenev , G. I. Uspensky , A. S. Pushkin .
He is also the author of several textbooks and study guides.
He was the editor-in-chief of the first and second volumes of the Dictionary of the Modern Russian Literary Language ( 1948 , 1950 ).

- Lenin Prize (1970, posthumous) - for the creation of the 17-volume “Dictionary of the Modern Russian Literary Language”.
