Danish India ( Dansk . Dansk Ostindien ) - a colony of Denmark in India . These colonies included Trankebar , in West Bengal, and the Nicobar Islands .
History
Danish colonies in India were founded by a Danish East India Company . The capital was Fort Dansborg in Trankebar, founded in 1620.
The Danes also founded the following settlements:
- 1696-1722 - Odedevay Torre, on the Malabar coast ;
- 1698-1714 - Dannemarksnagor (now Gondalpara) in the southeast of Chandanagore;
- 1752-1791 - Kozhikode ;
- October 1755 - Fredericksnagor (now Serampur) in West Bengal;
- 1754-1756 - Nicobar Islands subordinate;
- 1763 - Balazor (was previously occupied by the Danes in 1636-1643).
In 1789, the Andaman Islands became a British colony. During the Napoleonic Wars, the British attacked Danish ships at sea, upsetting trade. From May 1801 to August 1802, as well as from 1808 to September 20, 1815, Dansborg and Frederiksnagor were occupied by the British.
Denmark was forced to sell Fredericksnagor (in 1839) to Britain, Trankebar (in 1845, for 20 thousand pounds), and transfer the Nicobar Islands on October 16, 1869.
