The park is located between the mountains of Kilimanjaro and Meru, 25 km east of the regional center of Arusha . In close proximity to the park are also the city of Moshi and Kilimanjaro International Airport [3] .

The park consists of three main areas: Ngurdoto crater, Momella lakes and Mount Meru. Ngurdoto crater, also known as mini Ngorongoro , is the most protected place in the park and is closed to tourists who can only watch the wildlife from several viewing platforms on its edge. Momella Lakes are a group of shallow alkaline lakes fed by underground sources. Mount Meru is the fifth largest peak of Africa and the second of Tanzania with a height of 4565 meters [4] .

In 2005, the park was expanded at the expense of the Mount Meru Forest Reserve [5] .

Flora and fauna

Behind the main gates of the park there is a mountain forest. This is the only place in northern Tanzania where black and white colobuses can be easily seen. In the depths of the forest is located the crater Ngurdoto, on the swampy bottom of which herds of buffaloes and warthogs are found. To the north of the crater are the Momella lakes, which attract numerous waterfowl, especially flamingos . On the shores of the lakes are found water goats , giraffes , zebras and dikdiki ( bark ). Leopards and hyenas are also found in the park [3] .
