Half a kilometer north-west of the pond is the Tan-i-Bulh station of the Festiniog railway , and at the same distance to the south-east is the training center of the Snowdonia park, which occupies the estate with the same name - Plas Tan-y-Bwlch .
The pond was built in 1886 by the owner of the estate, William Edward Oakeley, on the birthday of his daughter Mary, who turned 21. That said, Mary Oakley herself was the organizer of the reservoir, and her father used the pond to receive electricity by putting a generator in the early 1890s and bringing water to it through pipes.
