History
The community is based at the House of Mercy, opened in 1993 on the lower East Side in Manhattan ( New York ). The founder of the community was Hieromonk Joachim (Parr) , whose original goal was to help the poor and homeless in the area. The building purchased in 1993 was in disrepair (there was no wiring and heating, most of the windows were knocked out and the roof fell through) and was restored by volunteers.
In 1995, a small chapel equipped on the second floor of the building appeared in the community, in which a full circle of services was held . In 1996, an English-speaking parish was formed around the monastic community. Due to the low capacity of the chapel, the Sunday Liturgy is celebrated in the main St. Nicholas Cathedral of the Patriarchal Parishes.
In 2008, the community acquired a 153-acre plot of land in Treadwell , New York , and founded the Spasskaya Desert there . One of the two barns on the site, built more than 200 years ago at the end of the 18th century, was converted into the Church of the Savior. Joachim was elevated to the rank of archimandrite . Among the locals, the desert became known as the Abbey of Treadwell. At the same time, the monastery in New York on the official website of the monastery was called the monastery of the Spasskaya Desert, since most of the brethren moved to Treadwell, and the monks go from there to replace the other with a chapel in honor of Mary of Egypt and St. Nicholas Cathedral. [1] .
In 2016, the monastery supported the arrival of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God in Spokane (Washington) [1] .
Number of inhabitants
In 2011, 12 monks and three nuns were constantly separately living in the desert [2] . By 2016, the number of inhabitants was 6 people (monks and novices) [1] . Currently, according to the site of the monastery, its New York brethren consists of six monks and three novices.
