History
Although the settlement existed as far back as the 12th century, Köge was first mentioned among the cities of Zealand only in the charter of King Eric VI , published in 1288. The charter granted Köge the same rights as the city of Roskilde, and also granted a four-year tax exemption. During the Middle Ages, the city became an important shopping center.
When Christopher of Oldenburgsky landed in Denmark in 1554 during the Count's feud , he prepared to attack Copenhagen and settled in Köge.
In 1612, the Witch Hunt began in Köge, resulting in at least 15 women being burned at the stake.
During the Danish-Swedish war of 1657-1658, the Swedish king Charles X Gustav , crossing the Great Belt in winter on ice, set up his headquarters in Köge. Since soon after the signing of the peace treaty between Denmark and Sweden a new war broke out and the Swedish king settled in Köge again, it was decided to strengthen the city, for which many buildings were destroyed. The decline of the city began.
In 1807, one of the battles of the Anglo-Danish war of 1807-1814 took place here. The loss of Norway and national bankruptcy led to the fact that in 1816 Köge was no more than a garrison post.
The growth in agricultural exports has breathed new life in Köge. In the first half of the 19th century, several industrial enterprises were created in the city (in 1842, an iron foundry, in 1852, paper and tobacco factories, etc.). In 1870, the railway came to the city.
In 2014, the round fortress of Valle Borgring with a diameter of 145 meters was discovered to the west of Koge on the island of Zealand [1] . In 2018, an oak ship 16 meters long and 7 meters wide was found on the coast [2] .
