Henry Tonks was born into a wealthy family. He was educated at Clifton College in Bristol , then studied medicine at Brighton University ( 1882 - 1885 ) and at the Royal Hospital in London ( 1885 - 1888 ). In 1888, Tonks defended his doctoral work and then practiced at the Royal Free Hospital in London.

Since 1892 - continues painting at the School of Fine Arts Slade . During this period, G. Tonks gets acquainted and becomes friendly with such masters as James Whistler , Walter Sickert and John Singer Sargent . During the First World War, Henry Tonks serves in France , is a member of the Royal Medical Corps. Particularly successful was his contribution, both as a doctor and as an artist, to plastic surgery . Like Sargent, Tonks was awarded the title of “military artist”, which allowed him to create a series of paintings on front-line workdays.
After the war and homecoming, Tonks joined the New English Art Club ( NEAC ). Later elected President of the School of Fine Arts, Slade , and holds this position until his retirement in 1930 .
According to the artist’s name, the graphic is called the “ Tonking-Technik ” technique, which consists in contrasting the pattern with charcoal or pencil, which allows you to erase yourself or smear it with a scarf. At the same time, the image density decreases and it becomes possible to use the charcoal to develop the details of the picture in more detail.
