After the death of the Palatine Count of Lorraine Herman II on September 20, 1085 in Dahlem , Henry managed to obtain the Brabant Landgrafism from Emperor Henry IV in temporary possession. Landgrafism was located between Dender and Senna . Moreover, the landgrave was a direct vassal of the emperor and did not obey the duke of Lower Lorraine. Around 1091, Henry was considered the most powerful man in Lower Lorraine [1] .
Hermann from Tournai (c. 1140 ) wrote that Henry III was popular during his lifetime: he drove out robbers [2] . In July 1086, Heinrich donated an allod to Affligem Abbey , with an area of about 300 hectares near Asse .
In February or March 1095, at the invitation of Everard from Tournai, Henry took part in a knightly tournament. He was mortally wounded by the knight Gosvin de Foret. Henry III is buried in the abbey in Nivelles . The next Earl of Leuven and Brussels was the brother of Heinrich Gottfried .
Marriage and children
Heinrich was married to Gertrude ( 1080 - 1117 ), daughter of Robert of Frisia , Count of Flanders . Modern sources mention four nameless daughters born in this marriage. Two daughters were identified:
- Adelheid (Adelaide), married to Simon I , Duke of Lorraine
- Gertrude, possibly married to Lamert, Earl of Montague and Clermont.
Gertrude, the widow of Henry, married in 1096 the Duke of Upper Lorraine Thierry II , whose son, her daughter Adelheid, married from Simon's first marriage. In the marriage of Dietrich and Gertrude, Thierry of Alsace , Count of Flanders , was born.
