Biography

The upbringing of the young Giuliano was led by Angelo Poliziano . After the expulsion of Pierrot from Florence (1494), his brother lived in Urbino at the court of the Duke of Guidobaldo , and then took advantage of the hospitality of the Republic of Venice . On September 1, 1512, they, together with their elder brother Giovanni at the head of the Spanish troops allocated by Ramon de Cardona , regained Florence .

In February 1513, Giovanni Medici , being a cardinal, formally handed over power to the city into the hands of Giuliano, and he returned to Rome , where he was soon elected pope . Soon, Pope Leo X bestowed on his brother Giuliano the title of "Captain-General of the Florentine Republic."

In 1515, on the eve of a dynastic marriage with Philibert Savoy (sister of Louise of Savoy and aunt Francis I ), his portrait against the background of the castle of St. Angela was written by Raphael . The portrait, known from earlier copies, was considered lost.

The French assumed to raise Giuliano to the Neapolitan throne, and on the occasion of their marriage to Philibert, they gave him the title of Duke of Nemours . This alliance turned out to be childless, however, due to a relationship with a certain Pachyfika Brandano, the Florentine ruler took over the son of Ippolito Medici , the future cardinal .

Giuliano rests in the Medici Chapel ( Basilica of San Lorenzo ), where Michelangelo gave his sculptural portrait the idealized features of an ancient Roman commander.
