The car received a chassis and a power unit from the rear-engine SEAT 850 of the 1964 model and a new body that closely resembles the front-wheel drive Fiat 127 of the 1971 model. Thus, the rear-engined scheme, still popular in the mountainous country, combined with a noticeably more spacious and safe body than the Italian rear-engined Fiat 126 model of the 1972 model.

The car was presented at the Barcelona Motor Show in May 1974 [1] . It is noteworthy that initially the compression ratio in the engine was only 8: 1, which allowed the car to run on gasoline with an octane rating of 85 [1] . This was quite normal by the Spanish standards of the time, while in other Western European countries regular gasoline was produced with a noticeably high octane rating [1] .

The SEAT 133 model replaced two models at once: the SEAT 850 and the SEAT 600 ; moreover, the latter produced an impressive quantity of about 800,000 by 1974 [2] .

In the first months, SEAT 133 was sold only in Spain, and sales were not very successful due to engine overheating. Nevertheless, the car gained great popularity in Egypt, where assembly production was launched at the facilities of El Nasr. Separate copies of SEAT 133 are still in use in Egypt. Since the fall of 1974, the export of SEAT 133 to Germany began , where the model was in certain demand among conservative fans of the rear-engine layout. Here the model was sold as a Fiat 133 and was located in the line between models 126 and 127. Export to England began in the summer of 1975. In markets outside Spain, where the SEAT brand was unknown and its branded dealer network was missing, the car was sold as Fiat 133 through the Fiat dealer network.

About 200,000 units were produced in Spain. SEAT 133. Another 15 821 units. Fiat 133 and the restyled Fiat 133B (1980) were produced by Fiat- Sevel at the Cordoba plant in Argentina from 1977 to 1982 [3] .
