Biography
Martin Henry Bolsam was born in the Bronx into a Jewish family. His father, Albert Bolsam, was a manufacturer of sportswear for women. [5] [6] While at school, he attended a drama club, [7] and after graduation, he studied at the New York School of Drama Workshop under the direction of the influential German theater director Erwin Piskator . His theatrical debut took place in 1941 in the production of "The play is everything." [8] During the Second World War, Martin Bolsam served in the US Air Force . In 1947, Elia Kazan and Lee Strasberg chose Bolsam to play one of the roles in their television project at the Actors Studio , which began his active career in television. He has appeared on TV shows such as The Twilight Zone, Dr. Kildare, She wrote the murder , and many others.
On the big screen, Bolsam made his debut in 1954 in the film " In the Port " (1954) with Marlon Brando in the title role. This was followed by new successful roles in films like “ 12 Angry Men ” (1957), “ Psycho ” (1960), “ Breakfast at Tiffany's ” (1961), “ Cape of Fear ” (1962) and “ Thousand Clowns ” (1965), the role in which the actor was awarded the Oscar as the best supporting actor. His roles in the films “ Torah! Torah! Torah! ”(1970),“ Murder on the Orient Express ” ” (1974), “ The entire Presidential Army ” (1976) and a remake of “ Cape of Fear ” (1991).
In addition, Martin Bolsam successfully played on the theater stage, receiving in 1967 the prestigious Tony Award for his role in the production of "You Know, I Can't Hear You When Water Spills."
The actor was married three times, and his first two spouses were actresses. From the second marriage, the actor left a daughter, actress Talia Bolsam , born in 1959, and from the third - a son and daughter. Martin Bolsam died of a heart attack in February 1996 in Rome and was buried in a cemetery in Bergen , New Jersey . [9]
