Graz Agreement

Graz Agreement is a ceasefire agreement between the President of the Republika Srpska Radovan Karadzic and the President of the Croatian Republic Herceg Bosn, Mate Boban , concluded on May 6, 1992 in the Austrian city ​​of Graz . The purpose of the agreement was to end the conflict between Serbian and Croatian forces in order to concentrate on taking territories controlled by the Bosniaks ^[1] . At that time, about 70% of the territory of today's Bosnia and Herzegovina was under the control of the Serbs. At the same time, Bosniaks made up 44% of the population of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina and numerically dominated the Bosnian government ^[2] .

This agreement, in fact, was a supplement to another agreement - Karadjordjevsky (concluded in March 1991 between Presidents Tudjman and Milosevic with the aim of dividing the spheres of influence in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the subsequent annexation of the “Serb” and “Croatian” regions by Serbia and Croatia, respectively) ^{[ 3]} . Between the large Serbian and Croatian states that appeared, there remained a buffer zone, which received the contemptuous nickname of “ Pashalyk Aliya ” from the Serbian and Croatian authorities. According to some military analysts, the Graz Agreement was one of the most important documents of the Bosnian war ^[4] .
