Formed as part of two brigades (2 regiments in each) during the reorganization of the cavalry on July 20, 1875. February 19, 1877 included in the newly formed IV Army Corps and stationed in the Vilna Military District. By 1897 it was transferred to the Warsaw Military District and by September 1, 1900 it was included in the VI Army Corps.
Fighting
Participated in the Russian-Turkish war of 1877-1878 . In April 1878 as part of the IV Corps was advanced to the Danube, replacing the 11th Cavalry Division in the village. Pelishat [1] . In the same year, the division took part in the capture of Etropolis, in the siege of Pleven, in the capture of the pass of the Brothers and the Great Mountains, in the occupation of the Balkan Pass and in the capture of the Philippopolis.
In July 1914, the division deployed on the Western border, covering the deployment of the 2nd Army [2] . As part of the same army participated in the East Prussian operation. At the first stage of the offensive, they protected the right flank of the 6th corps from the side of the Mazury lakes and maintained communication between the 6th and 6th corps [3] . On August 26, she occupied positions with Zensburg [2] . On August 29, the division received an order to advance from the region east of Ortelsburg towards Passenheim and Wartenburg. On the evening of the same day, the division advanced in two columns to Grammen (2nd brigade with two machine guns) and to Johannistal, Georgensgut and Passenheim (4th dragoon regiment with four machine guns, reinforced by the 8th horse battery). At 21:30, in the area of ββthe Davidshoff estate, the avant-garde of the 2nd Brigade was fired upon by the enemy, and after a half-hour firefight, the brigade turned on Johannistal, where it joined up with the second column. The same evening, in the Georgsgut area, the head patrols of the division discovered the presence of German infantry and artillery. The division commander, General Tolpygo, without trying to establish the forces and location of the enemy, ordered to retreat, passing Ortelsburg to Vavrohen, where the division arrived at 6:15 am on August 30 [4] [5] .
September 23, 1914 transferred to the 10th Army of the North-Western Front. May 24, 1915 transferred to the newly formed 5th Army of the North-Western Front.
