History

Since 1990, in the suburb of Lisbon Oeirashe ( Portugal ), the men's ATP tournament has been held, called the Estoril Open Championship in honor of the central court of the local tennis stadium. Throughout history, he belonged to the basic category of ATP tournaments: ATP World, ATP International, and since 2009 - ATP 250 .

A year earlier - in 1989 - under the name of the Estoril Open Championship , the women's ground tournament was also held. The prize stood two draws in the summer ground series, after which it was closed. In 1998, the championship was resumed in Oeirash - the first tournament of the new period was held under the auspices of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and had a prize fund of 75 thousand dollars , and from next year, the organizers were able to agree with the WTA and include their primacy in calendar of her tour (as a prize of IV category). In 2009, after changes in the tournament grid of the WTA tour, it falls into the category of WTA International .

Before the 2015 season, the tournament was reorganized: previous license holders could not find funding for the competition and refused both licenses. The women's part of the prize was eventually bought by a group of investors from Prague , raising the status of their women's tournament , while the men's part of the competition remained in Portugal , moving to a tennis club in Cascais . The new sponsor of the championship was Millennium BCP .

Winners and finalists

A record number of times the tournament was won by American Scott Lipsky , who won five times in doubles competitions (in 2009, 2013-16). Andrei Olkhovsky ( Russia ), Donald Johnson and Eric Butorak (both US ) excelled three times in pairs. In singles, Carlos Costa , Thomas Muster , David Nalbandian and Juan Martin del Potro won two wins. In general, the Spanish and Argentine masters dominate the men's tournament, winning a single tournament by 2016 19 times out of 27 draws. In 2018, for the first time in the 29-year history, the representative of Portugal, João Souza , who won the single competition, won the home tournament.

Among women, Spaniard Magee Serna in singles and the Chinese duo Li Ting / Sun Tientian became two-time champions in pairs and Slovenian Katharina Srebotnik , French Emily Lua and Russian Maria Kirilenko , who scored one victory in both singles and doubles .
