Johnson was successful both in Olympic archery and block archery. In addition to competing, Johnson also runs the Archery Center in Connecticut .
He made his debut at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona at the age of 36. He took 18th place in the individual championship and 6th in the team. In 1996, at the Atlanta Home Olympics, he won gold in a team (along with Rod White and Justin High ). Interestingly, the 40-year-old Johnson was then as old as White (19) and Haishu (21) combined. In the individual championship in Atlanta, Butch became 11th.
In 1999, Johnson won the bronze of the world championship in a team.
In 2000, in Sydney, Johnson won the bronze in the team (along with Rod White and Vic Wanderle ). In the individual championship in Sydney, Butch took 19th place, defeating the Slovene Peter Koprivnikar 164-151 in the first round and losing 160-166 to the Korean O Kyo Moon in the second round.
In 2004, in Athens, the US team was close to another award in the team championship, but lost in the match for third place to the Ukrainians 235-237. Johnson took 52nd place in the individual championship, losing to Ron van der Hofu from the Netherlands 135-145 in the first round.
In 2008, in Beijing, 52-year-old Johnson was the oldest participant in the Olympic archery tournament. In the personal championship, he became the 28th: in the first round, he only after the third additional shot managed to defeat Russian Andrei Abramov , and in the second round lost to Korean Im Don Hyun. In the team, the Americans lost in the first round to Taiwan shooters 218–222.
