Nuclear Test

Between 1966 and 1996 , 181 nuclear tests were carried out at Mururoa, which regularly provoked protests around the world.

July 25, 1979 tests were carried out at half the usual depth, because the device got stuck during the descent into the 800 meter shaft [1] . France still has not published data on radioactive contamination as a result of this incident.

There is no permanent population. Prior to the cessation of nuclear testing, there were a small number (no more than 3,000 people) of maintenance personnel permanently residing on the island.
