Life and work

Harold Gilman studied painting at the Slade School of Fine Arts in 1897-1901 . Together with Walter Sickert in 1907, Gilman was one of the founders of the Fitzroy Street art group . In 1911, he, also with Sickert, formed the influential Camden Town group. Members of both groups worked primarily in the genre of landscape and portraiture. G. Gilman during this period was fascinated by the work of Van Gogh , Cezanne , Gauguin , later - Matisse . The artist called his own style neorealism (at an exhibition of his works in 1914 ). Gilman’s realistic canvases are created with short, juicy brush strokes, the color scheme is diverse - from a rather meager combination of colors to real fountains of color.

In 1912 and 1913, the artist makes a trip to Scandinavia. In his paintings during this trip, the influence of Van Gogh's painting is felt (for example, in Canal Bridge, Flekkefjord, (1913) ). Married to American artist Grace Cornelia Kanedi. They had two daughters and one son, David. Gilman married a second time in the late summer of 1917 to Sylvia Hardy, an artist who had studied with him since 1914. Mr. Gilman died of a Spanish woman during the flu pandemic in 1918-1919 .
