Gefions Fountain ( Dat. Gefionspringvandet ) - a fountain near the harbor in Copenhagen . The sculptural composition of the fountain depicts the Scandinavian fertility goddess Gefion with four bulls. The fountain is located in the park Langelinie near the fortification of Castellet .
Legend
The fountain was created based on the legend from Edda , according to which the king of Sweden Gülfe promised Gefion, a woman from the Azov family, as much as a gift as much land as can be plowed on four bulls in one night. Gefion turned four of her sons, born of a giant, into bulls, and they made such a deep furrow that they cut off from Sweden a large piece of land called Gefion island of Zealand . In the place where Zealand was before, according to legend, Lake Lögrinn was formed. According to a legend, this lake is the largest Swedish lake Venern , in the form really reminiscent of Zealand.
History
The fountain was donated to the city by the Carlsberg Foundation in honor of the 50th anniversary of the founding of the brewery. Initially, it was planned to build a fountain in the main square of Copenhagen in front of the town hall building, but then it was decided to erect it in the present place. The sculptural composition was created by Danish sculptor Anders Bundgaard in 1897–99, and the reservoir and pedestal were completed in 1908. The fountain was first launched on July 14, 1908. In 1999, restoration work began, and the fountain began to work again only in September 2004.
