Competition Rules
The competition is held twice a year on non-commercial basis. Referees are science fiction writers, literary figures and publishers.
Each competition begins with the publication of the topic chosen by the arbitrator for the competition. The topic can be formulated in any manner and include a variety of requirements. Then, in the time allotted for this - usually three days - anyone can write a story on a given topic and register it for participation in the first round. Upon expiration, the evaluation of the works begins Each of the registered participants evaluates all available stories and selects the six most liked ones. According to the results of this vote, winners are determined. In the case when the number of participating stories exceeds the number determined by the jury, the vote is held in two rounds.
The competition does not allow stories started or written before the announcement of the topic. The authorship of the stories is not disclosed until the announcement of the results. [2] Participants who disclose their authorship to this are disqualified.
The resulting discrepancy between the dates (the original name of the contest is “48 hours”, while in reality it lasts from 3:00 pm Friday to 11:59 pm Monday) raises persistent questions among the authors participating in the “Hot-water bottle” for the first time. An explanation of this was written by Leonid Kaganov in the official LiveJournal community. :
Initially called the “story in 48 hours”, the Hot-water contest starts at 15:00:00 Fridays, and the reception of work closes at the last second of Monday (after 11:59:59 PM Moscow time). At first glance, this is strange, but this is a completely natural explanation. The fact is that the competition was initially conceived globally by the Russian, officially it starts really at midnight - exactly at 00:00, but only where this midnight comes first of all: in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. In Moscow at this time 15:00. To ensure that everyone is on an equal footing and no one is hurt because of the shift of daylight, the Hot-water bottle moves with the Sun in all nine time zones, bypasses the country and ends in Moscow at 23:59. Therefore, the reception of works from the authors of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky should have ended 9 hours earlier, and Muscovites, in turn, should have learned the topic 9 hours later. But in the conditions of the Internet to observe it turned out to be impossible. The first eight heaters were filled with confusions, squabbles and frauds, their results still cause fair doubts. As a result, it was decided to start the contest and finish for all participants at the same time: The hot water bottle starts at 00:00 Saturday (in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky), and ends at 23:59 Monday (Moscow time). |
