In the 1883/84 season , Newton Heath (Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway) took part in official football matches for the first time in its history. For five years before that, the club had only friendly matches against local teams. “Newton Heat” began performances in the Lancashire Cup in October 1883, but flew out of the tournament after the first round, losing to the reserve team of the Blackburn Olympic Club [1] .

Lancashire Cup
In the first ever official match, Newton Heat (Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway) met at the North Road home stadium with Blackburn Olympic Club. The meeting was part of the Lancashire Cup . In the previous season, 1882/83, Blackburn Olympic won the FA Cup . Olympic put up its reserve team against Newton Heat. The match took place on October 27, 1883. After the first half, the score was 2: 1 in favor of Olimpik. At the beginning of the second half, the Newton Heat players equalized, but then conceded five goals into their own net and lost with the score 7: 2 [1] .
According to some reports, by this time the entrance to the North Road stadium was paid: the club set an admission fee of 3 pennies [1] .
