The most famous and widespread religion in Denmark is the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Danish People , which has the status of a state religion. Nevertheless, representatives of many other religious traditions also live in Denmark. Thanks to the massive immigration of the 1980s and 90s, Islam is the second largest number of believers.
In general, Danes are not very religious, according to a 2005 study [3] Denmark is the third country in the world by the number of atheists and agnostics, their share in the population is from 43% to 80%. A 2005 Eurobarometer study showed that 31% of Danish citizens believe that they believe in God, 49% believe in a certain spirit or vitality, and 19% do not believe in any of the above [4] . Despite this, Christmas remains the most popular holiday in Denmark, although it is celebrated more culturally than religiously.
By the end of 2007, 82.1% of Danes were members of the Church of the Danish People, in 2008 the number fell to 81.5%. However, like the rest of Scandinavia , Northwest Europe and the UK , only a small minority (less than 10% of the total population) attend churches for Sunday services. In Copenhagen, the number of members of the Danish state church fell to 65% in 2008.
Catholicism , according to Vatican statistics, professes 0.6% of the Danish population [5] .
Christianity is also rarely used in politics, the Christian Democratic Party of Denmark is the only political party that regularly uses religious rhetoric and its influence is very low with less than 2% of the voters supporting them. According to the JΓΈrn Borup Center (Department for the Study of Religion at Aarhus University, Denmark), about 20,000 Buddhism followers also live in Denmark (see Ole Nydahl ). There are also about 500 registered representatives of pre-Christian Danish beliefs (0.01% of the population). In 2003, the neopagan organization Forn Cider was registered.
The Muslim majority of the deputies of the city of Kokkedal opposed the installation of the city Christmas tree in 2012 [6] [7] [8] .
