Biography

Comes from a poor family of Giacomo Domenico Fontana and Marta Bellotti, from the village of Castello in the Val di Sole Valley ( Italian: Val di Sole ), province of Trento . Most of the Italian late Baroque architects came from these places.

It is not known where Fontana was educated. March 2, 1723 he left Italy in search of a better life in the Commonwealth . Until April 1726 he lived in Warsaw , and then, with the assistance of the famous architect Giuseppe Fontana, he entered the service of one of the most influential magnates, crown marshal Pavel Karl Sangushka . This period of the architect's life was the most productive.

He creates typical and at the same time vivid examples of sacred architecture, namely, St. Anne's Cathedral in Lubartu , St. Ludwik's Cathedral in Wlodawa , the Cathedral and the Monastery of the Reformed Fathers in Rawa Russka , the Greek Catholic Cathedral in Chelm .

In 1730 , he married his first wife, Marianna Sufczynska ( Polish: Marianna Suffczyńska ). In the period 1730-40 he received the rank of lieutenant of artillery of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania , though completely formal.

In 1745 he returned to Italy, but the very next year he signed a new service contract at the court of Prince Paul Karl Sangushko, now in Izyaslav .

After the death of his wife, he remarried (c. 1748 ) with Teresa Romaironi ( Italian: Teresa Romaironi ). Although Fontana noted the construction stagnation in Volhynia , in those years he built the cathedral and monastery of the Lazarite fathers in Izyaslav, the wooden cathedral in Belogorodka , the Dominican Cathedral in Vinnitsa , the Cathedral of the Jesuit Fathers in Kremenets , the Parafial Cathedral in Chudnov , the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Starokonstantinov , the Cathedral the Jesuit Fathers in Zhytomyr , the palace of Princes Sangushko in Izyaslav (together with Jakub Fontana ( Italian: Jakub Fontana ).

After the death of Prince Paul Karl Sangushko ( 1750 ), his ambitious widow Barbara Sangushko made grandiose plans. However, old age and illnesses prevented the architect from realizing them fully. In addition, Paolo Fontana missed his homeland and always sought to return there, as evidenced by his letters and financial statements on the acquisition of property in Italy.

Around 1764, the architect finally loses sight. March 17, 1765 Paolo Fontana died. He was buried in Izyaslav, but his grave was not preserved. After his death, the architect's family moved to Lviv .

Paolo Fontana had eight children, four of whom died in childhood.
