The basis of the painting by Magritte is the plot of the portrait of Madame Recamier by French artist Jacques Louis David , written in 1800. In Magritte, the figure of the heroine is replaced by a coffin, repeating the woman's pose from the painting of David. The painting by Magritte was acquired in 1997 by the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa ^[1] .
