Pentecenter or petecenter [1] ( dr. Greek πεντεκόντορος “fifty festivities ”) [2] - an ancient Greek galley, open, without a deck ( catastromes ).
Displacement of about 10 tons; 50 rowers - 24 oars of 2 and 2 oars of 1 rower. According to some modern calculations, the total length was between 28 and 33 meters, a width of at least 4 m, a speed of up to 9 knots (18 km / h).
Already existed in the Trojan War . Along with the triacontactor, the most common type of Greek warship, from the archaic period (XII-VIII centuries BC). There is a general opinion of modern historians that was the forerunner of bireme . It was mainly used as a military transport, but was also used for ramming small ships.
