The street appeared from the base of the city. The street connected the Cathedral Dvorishche (the city’s founding place) along the coast with the Pokrovsky Monastery (Settlement) built in the 14th century . The southern fortress wall of Veliky Ustyug passed along the street.
Not a single plan for rebuilding the city after the fires of the 18th century did not cancel the existence of the street. In terms of Golubev, the street ran from the modern Sukhonskaya street to Shchelkunov Street (according to the plan - the continuation of Shumilova Street ).
Throughout its existence, the street was actively built up by merchant mansions and churches.
The panorama of the Embankment begins with the Ilya and Leontief Church, then the Cathedral courtyard with a whole town of domes and spiers, then the complex of the bishop’s courtyard with the Alekseevskaya church, then the Nikolskaya church is located on the square and the panorama ends with the temple of Simeon Stolpnik.
