Paper Bonds
The issuance of paper booms in the Arctic Sea for use on Svalbard began in 1931 [1] [2] [3] .
In 1941, due to the outbreak of war, coal mining was suspended, residents of Soviet villages were evacuated. In 1943, part of the buildings at the mines was damaged by artillery fire from German ships. The use of arcticogol bon on Svalbard was discontinued.
On August 29, 1946, the Council of Ministers of the USSR adopted a resolution “On the restoration of Soviet coal mines on Svalbard Island,” paragraph 43 of which instructed the USSR Ministry of Finance to issue special bonds worth 3 million rubles for internal circulation on Svalbard from October 1, 1946 [4] . This time, the bonds were issued both paper and metal. Later 4 more issues of paper bonds followed: 1951, 1957, 1961 and 1978 [5] .

In 2012, in honor of his 80th birthday, Arktikugol ordered at the St. Petersburg Mint sets consisting of copies of metal bons of 1946 and a commemorative token [8] .
1993 Metal Bonds
In 1993, the Moscow Mint minted the bonds with the image on the obverse of a polar bear and a map of the islands. Since they had the inscription “Russian Federation” and a map of the islands on them, the Norwegian government demanded that these bonds be removed from circulation on the islands. 1998 Coin Tokens
In March 1999, CJSC Infobalt ordered coin-like tokens at the St. Petersburg Mint. On these tokens was placed an image of a map of the archipelago and the inscription "Svalbard" and "Arcticugol." Denominations of tokens are indicated in numbers, without indicating a unit (ruble). Under the denomination is a mint mark and an indication of the year - “1998”. Tokens of six denominations with a circulation of 6000 pcs were made:
- 0.1 (aluminum)
- 0.25 (aluminum)
- 0.50 (aluminum)

- 5 (copper, nickel).
There are tokens of all denominations, made not in "their own" metal (0.1 - in brass and copper-nickel alloy, etc.).
