In Donetsk, there are 262 historical and cultural monuments [1] , these include sculptures, memorials, memorials, plaques. 18 - devoted to the October Revolution of 1917 , 9 - to the Civil War , 30 - to art, 30 - to work, 37 - mass graves, 3 - to victims of fascism, 3 - to CPSU figures, 1 - to police officers, 1 - to the founder of the city.
The first monument of Donetsk (then Yuzovka) was the monument to Alexander II . It was supposed to open in 1916, but collapsed a few days before the opening [2] .
Some monuments are a gift to Donetsk from other cities. So Moscow presented a copy of the Tsar Cannon , Bochum - a copy of the bell installed at the town hall , Kiev - the original sculpture of Archangel Michael .
The sculptors worked on the monuments of Donetsk: Yuri Baldin , Efim Belostotsky , George Bero , Leonid Brin , Makar Vronsky , Naum Ginzburg , Yuri Mozhchil , Alexey Oleinik , Victor Piskun , Alexander Porozhnyuk , Alexander Rukavishnikov , Alexander Skorykh , Nikolay Yasinenko and others.
In 2008, the Donetsk City Council rejected by a majority vote a document according to which local authorities were supposed to demolish monuments to Soviet party and state figures [3] .
In the 1990-2000s, the monuments of Donetsk were periodically attacked by vandals - for example, in 2005 the monument to Taras Shevchenko was doused with paint [4] , at the end of the 2000s memorial plaques on Postysheva street [5] and Artyom were destroyed, in addition painted with the paint of the grave of fighters for Soviet power , monuments to Dzerzhinsky and Artyom .
