History
The national team of Serbia held its first official match on May 26, 2007 in the Moscow Krylatskoye sports center as part of the World League and lost to the Russian team with a score of 0: 3. The team of Igor Kolakovich did not have long-term leaders of the national team of Yugoslavia (Serbia and Montenegro) : after the 2006 World Cup, performances for the Balkan team were completed by Vladimir Grbich and Goran Vuevich , paused by Andria Gerich , Slobodan Boskan , Ivan Milkovich and Nikola Grbich . Serbia ended the World League 2007 with 9th place, but thanks to the return of experienced players to the team at the next major start - the European Championships in Moscow and St. Petersburg - Serbia won bronze medals, and its attack leader Ivan Milkovich became the most successful player.
In 2008, the Serbian national team became a World League finalist, losing in the decisive match for the US national team , and lost to the same opponent in the dramatic five-set quarter-finals at the Beijing Olympics . In 2009, the Serbian team repeated its success in the World League , taking second place in the home Final Six, and became fifth in the European Championship in Turkey .
In the World League 2010, the Serbian national team, despite the absence of Nicola GrbiΔ and Ivan Milkovich from the team, was again able to achieve medal success, becoming the bronze winner of the tournament. And in October 2010, two illustrious veterans brought their team to the third step of the World Championship podium: captain Nikola Grbych was named the best binder of the tournament, and Ivan Milkovich became the second in the championship in performance.
In 2011, the Serbian national team won the European Championship , held in Austria and the Czech Republic . In the matches of the group stage, the Serbian team did not suffer a single defeat, then on the way to the finals overcame the stubborn resistance of the teams of France and Russia and in the decisive match prevailed over the Italians . The captain of the national team of Serbia Ivan Milkovich was recognized as the most valuable player in the tournament. In November of that year, the Serbs got off to a bad start at the World Cup in Japan, and although they found their game along the way, they could not compete for medals and a ticket to the London Olympics. The Igor Kolakovich team obtained the Olympic license only in June 2012, having won the world qualification tournament - already without Milkovich, who had just announced his retirement in the national team shortly before it began. In London, the Serbian team won only one victory (over Tunisia ) and stopped participating after the group stage.
In September 2013, the Balkan team won the bronze medals of the European Championship, and its new main diagonal, Aleksandar Atanasievich, became the most successful player in the continental championship. However, stability in the results did not come to the Serbian national team even on September 15, 2014, when it prematurely stopped fighting for the World Cup awards in Poland and finally took 9th place, Igor Kolakovich resigned from his post as head coach [1] . On February 3, 2015, Nikola GrbiΔ was appointed the new coach of the Serbian national team [2] .
In July 2015, the Serbian national team became the silver medalist of the World League , but three months later unsuccessfully performed at the European Championships . In the quarterfinals of the European championship, as in the decisive match of the World League, Serbs were defeated by France . In January 2016, the team of Nikola Grbych at the European Qualification Tournament in Berlin lost to the national teams of Poland and Germany , which did not allow her to get into the playoffs and compete for a ticket to the Games in Rio de Janeiro . However, in the same Olympic season, the Serbian national team won the World League for the first time, having won in the final match in Krakow over the Brazilians - 3: 0. The most valuable player in the βFinal Sixβ of the World League was recognized as a player, Marko Ivovich . In the meantime, performances for the national team were completed by the followers Milos Nikic and Nikola Kovachevich , diagonal Sasha Starovich , blocking Milan Rasic , and binder Vlado Petkovich . In September 2017, the renewed Serbian national team won bronze at the European Championships in Poland .
