In 1950, at the age of 18, he first became the Berlin lightweight champion. He won this title in 1951, 1952, 1954 and 1955. in the 1st and 2nd welterweight.
In 1952 he became the champion of Germany in the second welterweight, at the Olympic Games in Helsinki (1952) he won a bronze medal in the same weight category. In 1955, he again won the FRG championship, but failed at the Berlin continental championship of the same year, losing to the future champion Briton Nicholas Gargano in the second round.
In 1956, ends his career and for a long time works as a coach at the Neuköllner Sportfreunde club.
