Vladimir Stanislavovich Saxon ( May 17, 1927 , Leningrad , USSR - March 13, 1988 , Leningrad, USSR) - Soviet painter, graphic artist, illustrator, theater artist, member of the Leningrad organization of the Union of Artists of the RSFSR [1] .

Biography

Saxon Vladimir Stanislavovich was born on May 17, 1927 in Leningrad. In 1940-1941 he studied in the art studio of the Leningrad Palace of Pioneers with teachers S. Levin and M. Gorokhova. [2] In 1941, Vladimir entered the Secondary Art School (now the B.V. Johanson Art Lyceum) at the Leningrad Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture , where he received a creative charge for life, because A. A. Mylnikov and O. B. Bogaevskaya.


At the beginning of 1942, together with the secondary school, he was evacuated from the besieged Leningrad, first to Samarkand , and then to the Penza region due to his mother’s illness. In 1944, refugees returned to Leningrad and Vladimir continued his studies at the Secondary School, which he graduated in 1949. In the same year he entered the painting department of the Leningrad Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture named after I.E. Repin . He studied with Alexander Debler , Yuri Neprintsev , Mikhail Platunov , Alexander Segal . In 1954 he graduated from the institute in the workshop of Mikhail Bobyshov [3] . During the training, an on-site theater team was organized, as a result of which V. S. Saxon became the author of scenography for the plays “Trembita” and “Free Wind”. Thesis - the design of sketches, costumes and scenery for the play "Sadko" N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov.

After graduation, V. Saxon went to Perm , where he worked as an artist in the Opera and Ballet Theater . In the archives of the theater are stored sketches created by V. S. Saxon for costumes and sets for performances. At the same time he worked under contracts with the local branch of the Art Fund as a painter and graphic artist. In 1956 he was admitted to the Perm Union of Soviet Artists. Since 1955, V. S. Saxon participated in the Leningrad and All-Union exhibitions of the Union of Artists. In 1958 he returned to Leningrad, collaborated with the Art Fund, and illustrated books at the publishing houses " Children's Literature " and "Moscow Worker". Saxon's book graphics were a favorite field of creativity. With particular pleasure, he created illustrations for the poetry of V. Soloukhin, V. Fedorov, B. Kornilov.

At the same time, V.S. Saxon worked creatively as a painter, painted landscapes, portraits, still lifes. He worked not only in easel, but also in monumental painting. He made trips to Lake Baikal [4] , to Kyrgyzstan , to Tyumen, the Sayan Mountains. He worked at the creative base of Leningrad artists in Staraya Ladoga , in Goryachy Klyuch, at the Academic Dacha, in Gurzuf . In 1960 he was admitted to the Leningrad organization of the Union of Artists of the RSFSR .

Among the paintings created by Saxon are the paintings “Lower Angarsk Street” [5] , “Repairing Nets”, “Pier” [6] , “In Listvyanka” [7] , “Khuzhir” [6] (all 1959), “In Tien Shan mountains ”,“ Evening still life ” [8] [9] (both 1961),“ The road to the quarry ”,“ Dawn ”,“ October ” [10] (all 1964),“ Sea fish ”,“ Tamara ” [11] (both 1965), “Morning” [12] (1968), “Showcase”, “In the Hermitage” [13] , “Baikal” [14] , “White Night” [15] (all 1969), “ Portrait of N. G. Leonova ” [16] (1970),“ River ”,“ Birch ” [17] ,“ Night ” [18] (all 1971),“ Night in the workshop ” [19] ,“ White Night ”, “Fish Sargan” [20] , “Female Portrait” [16] (all 1972), “April”, “In the House Creativity ”,“ At Dawn ” [20] (all 1973),“ Night ”,“ Poplar ”,“ Birdhouses ” [21] (all 1975),“ The Lake ” [22] (triptych, 1980),“ Lingerie ” [ 14] (1982) and others. The development of the artist’s pictorial manner went from the traditional open-air writing of the 1950s to the enhancement of decorativeness of color and locality of color, conventionality and some theatricality of the compositional solution, generalization of the picture. The style of the work was determined by the author’s intention and the nature of the work itself and ranged from conditionally decorative to natural-realistic. In the 1980s, V.S. Saxon fulfilled a large order for the Admiralty Shipyards, creating 5 large-scale monumental panels depicting the glorious history of the Russian fleet. [23]

Vladimir Stanislavovich Saxon died on March 13, 1988 in Leningrad in his sixty-first year of life.

In 1993, a posthumous personal exhibition of V.S. Saxon in LOSH took place. In 2007, a personal exhibition of V. S. Saxon was held at the Arka art gallery (St. Petersburg). [24] The catalog “Vladimir Saxon. Painting ”with an introductory article by E. V. Loginova (St. Petersburg, 2007). His works are in the collections of the Perm State Museum and the Museum of the Academy of Arts named after I.E. Repin, Novokuznetsk Museum of Art, Astrakhan State Gallery, Museum of Fine Arts Brno (Slovakia), as well as in private collections in Russia, Japan [25] , the USA, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and other countries.
