Biography
He studied at the Military Institute of Foreign Languages , at the philological faculty of Moscow State University , but did not graduate from either one. It has been published since 1962. The first collection of poems was published in 1971. Member of the USSR SP since 1974. Translated Georgian poets.
The poet himself reported the following about himself:
I live in my homeland, in Kostroma, where I was born in 1933. He was taken to Moscow at an unconscious age, graduated from a Moscow school, studied at the Odessa Higher Nautical Institute, at the Military Institute of Foreign Languages, served in the army (Shuya, Gorokhovets camps), studied at the faculty of Moscow State University, left the 5th year, having received “5” for the subject that he knew at “2+”, he worked in a rural school, in a carpentry brigade, at the Zapsib construction site, at electrification of the Krasnoyarsk railway. He worked in the journal Literary Georgia, translated a lot. When I was a boy, I thought in German - thanks to my unforgettable "German" Ekaterina Petrovna Sulkhanova. Do not find foppishness a conversation with Byron in English. In my dictionary, the speeches of Olonets and Kostroma are crowded together with Romanesque and Germanic. I love the original sound. I comprehend the Russian language all my life. [one]
Creativity
... spiritually, a rare independent person ... - Leonovich’s work is distinguished by a deep internal connection with the Russian peasant tradition, a firm conviction of the need for spiritual freedom. His poems in a narrative manner speak of his sufferings from the destruction of nature, fields, meadows and forests, the destruction of churches and monasteries, the burning of archives, and devoid of youth ideals. He blames the destroyers who are unable to either build or protect the inherited values. Leonovich sharply opposed imaginary ideals, against official falsity in art, architecture, against official literature with its aggressive spirituality. His lyrics go back to the traditions of E. Baratynsky. His thoughts are generated by the Christian worldview. Through despair due to self-destruction of Russia at the end of the 20th century. Leonovich comes to the ideals of forgiveness, kindness and love as the only true spiritual values. [2]

Quote
In his biography, Leonovich knows how to go against tradition, both domestic and writers. It would seem that not too pathetic professions - the waiter and the district officer. Leonovich proves: pathetic. The strength of his attentive love is such that you believe when he says about the waiter: "What a hell of a smile, what a sadness ... What a talent" You believe in his police lieutenant from an intelligent family: "Not at all ostentatious - a young trustee comes with a holster "...
