History
On December 1, 1989, two companies (Net and Silkar) began a partnership with Aer Lingus to create a tourist and charter airline called Pegasus Airlines. Flights began on April 15, 1990 on two Boeing 737-400 aircraft. However, in the same summer, Iraq invaded Kuwait and the seven-month occupation of Kuwait seriously hit the tourism industry in Turkey [2] .
By 1992, tourists began to return to the country, and Pegasus began to grow with the commissioning of the third Boeing 737-400. Later, the airline leased two Airbus A320 aircraft for work in the summer peak [2] .
After two successful years, Aer Lingus and Net sold their shares in 1994 to Istanbul-based Yapi Kreditbank ; thus Pegasus became a fully Turkish company [2] .
On September 4, 1997, Pegasus placed an order for one Boeing 737-400 and one Boeing 737-800, thus becoming the first Turkish carrier to order the Boeing 737 Next Generation . The airline also entered into leasing agreements for ten Boeing 737-800 aircraft with International Lease Finance Corporation [2] .
In January 2005, ESAS Holdings bought Pegasus Airlines and appointed it chairman Ali Sabanji. Two months later, the acquired airline was reorganized from a charter to a budget airline. In November 2005, Pegasus placed an order for 12 new Boeing 737-800 [2] .
In 2007, Pegasus became the largest Turkish non-state carrier in terms of passenger numbers. In 2008, it transported 4.4 million passengers [3] .
In 2012, the airline acquired a forty-nine percent stake in Kyrgyz Air Manas . March 22, 2013 Air Manas completed its first flight under the brand name Pegasus Asia. In 2015, the airline became an independent brand.
Activities in Russia
The airline operates regular flights to Moscow ( Domodedovo Airport ), Grozny, Samara, Mineralnye Vody, Krasnodar and Sochi; charter - to Novosibirsk [4] .
After the deterioration of Russian-Turkish relations in 2015 associated with the destruction of the Turkish Air Force of the Russian Su-24 in Syria , the airline on January 1, 2016 suspended flights to Russia [5] . From January 15, 2016, the airline resumed regular flights to Russia.
Incidents
On January 14, 2018, an airline plane made an unsuccessful landing in Trabzon. As a result, the liner rolled out of the runway and was 10 meters from the Black Sea. On board the aircraft were 164 people, who were urgently evacuated. There are no victims.
