The United States of Canada and the Land of Jesus are two fictitious states resulting from a comic change in the state border between the United States and Canada . Such a change was “proposed” on November 3, 2004 at one of the Internet forums and gained immense fame in the American media .
The “Border Change” was inspired by the results of the 2000 and 2004 presidential elections in the United States , when the states of the North-East and the Pacific coast of the USA voted for the liberal program of the Democratic Party (candidates Albert Gore and John Kerry ), and the conservative Republican candidate George W. Bush defeated in other regions (and as a result won elections both times). As a result, republican states (except Alaska ) formed a territory without gaps, and democratic states also formed a territory without gaps when merged with Canada. The previous few elections did not lead to such a clear territorial "demarcation."
The creators of the joke argue that residents of pro-democratic regions have political views on a more liberal Canada, and the rest of the United States professes more patriarchal views, often associated with traditional Protestantism , hence the name "Jesusland" - you can often see slogans on the highway of these states with the name of God : Jesus bless us ; Jesus loves you , etc. Sometimes the conservative zone is also called " Rednekistan ."
There is a version of the map on which the most conservative province of Canada, Alberta , bordering the republican states, is assigned to the Land of Jesus. In another version, Alaska is returned to Russia .
Critics of this view of the territorial division of American society indicate, in particular, the fact that in no state did any party have an overwhelming superiority. If we present the election results not by states, but by districts , then the US map will not appear split into a red and blue belt, but rather a mixed, “purple” one: quite often, two neighboring constituencies vote differently.
In the 2008 elections, such a “beautiful” picture did not work out; Democratic candidate Barack Obama won in New Mexico , Nevada , Colorado , Florida , Virginia and North Carolina , so that the democratic states did not form an inextricable territory.
