The Abrahamic covenant — in Mormonism — is the covenant (contract) of exaltation made between God and Abraham at the time of Abraham's marriage into a celestial marriage ( Doctrine and Covenants 131: 1-4; 132: 19, 29). Abraham previously received the gospel and was ordained high priests ( Doctrine and Covenants 84:14; Book of Abraham 1: 2).
In connection with this covenant, Abraham received the following promises from God regarding his family:
- his posterity will be numerous (Genesis 17: 5-6; Abraham's book 2: 9, 3:14);
- his seed, or descendants, will receive the gospel and become a priesthood holder (Book of Abraham 2: 9);
- thanks to the ministry of his seed, all the families of the earth will be blessed “with the blessings of the gospel, which are the blessings of salvation, yes, eternal life” (Book of Abraham 2:11).
This is one of the everlasting covenants that applies to all the seed of Abraham (Genesis 17: 7). To enter the seed of Abraham, a person must obey the laws and ordinances of the gospel. Then he will be able to receive all the blessings of the Abrahamic covenant, even if he is not the literal descendant of Abraham (Galatians 3: 26-29, 4: 1-7; Doctrine and Covenants 84: 33-40).
All members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are considered children of the covenant (3 Nephi 20: 25-26) who inherit all the promises God made to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob .
